A 31-year-old man from Nyeve village under Chief Skobokobo in Nkayi has been remanded in custody after appearing in court accused of stealing a generator battery.

Njabulo Ncube appeared before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware facing charges related to the theft of a 12-volt battery valued at US$200.

Prosecutor Shiela Nyathi told the court that the incident occurred on the morning of 1 March at Redwood Ultra City garage in Figtree.

According to the State, Ncube allegedly entered the premises and removed a Taurus 12-volt battery that was connected to a generator before attempting to leave with it.

The complainant, Caline Moyo, 57, who works as a security guard at Redwood Ultra City, reportedly saw the accused during the incident while she was on duty.

Moyo alerted a colleague, Bothwell Tshuma, after noticing the suspected theft.

The court heard that Ncube allegedly dropped the battery behind a bar located about 50 metres from the garage after realising he had been seen.

He then attempted to flee the scene.

The two security guards reportedly pursued and apprehended him before handing him over to the police.

The stolen battery was later recovered.

Magistrate Nembaware remanded Ncube in custody pending trial as investigations continue.
